For True Love Conquers All by Ciro1984 For True Love Conquers All by Ciro1984
Celebrating Spirit Day on DeviantArt with a purple-tinted twist on my old Sleeping Beauty piece [link]

This is dedicated to

Tyler Clementi
Lawrence King
Seth Walsh
Asher Brown
Billy Lucas
Matthew Shepard
Brandon Teena

And all the other, countless, nameless princes and princesses who won't be waking up after true love's first kiss because intolerance, hate, bigotry and stupidity destroyed their lives.

I'm a straight male, born and raised in the most catholic place you can think of (a small town near Rome, Italy). I'm lucky because I have a wonderful family that never stopped me from becoming my own person despite the pressure from the small-minded community I live in. I'm majoring in Art History and all my life I've been given the opportunity to open myself to all kinds of people and cultures. Through the years, mostly because of what I study, I've known many gay guys and girls and, being kind of an outcast myself for other reasons, the problems of the Italian LGBT community have always affected my point of view, through my friends' experiences. I kind of hate the term "straight ally" because the word "ally" makes it sound like a war, which is never a good thing. But when a good friend of yours, a nice kid, tells you of how he was thrown out of his own home at 17 when he came out to his folks, and how they never spoke to him again, and when you see him and his boyfriend having to spend Christmas away from their bigot families, not even able to afford presents for each other...well, it makes you think. The concept of "ally" starts to sound strangely appealing.
And it's not only that. In Italy we're currently living in a right-wing government that's destroying any good that had been done so far towards acceptance of all races, religions and orientations. It's a government that's slowly turning the younger generations into mindless drones without any respect for the dignity of the human being - younger generations that are responsible for hideous hate crimes that have been affecting the country, and especially Rome, during the last couple of years. Reports of teenagers attacking gay couples on the streets are almost a weekly appointment on the news, and during the last summer the absurd bigotry of those same people that voted for the current government - TWICE - reached new heights: they actually had gay kissing BANNED from some beaches. And that's only what happens in the general population, the remarks about gay couples that come from right-wing politicians or even the freaking Pope are not even worth repeating.

Thank you DA for allowing me and other people who feel strongly about this issue like me to express what we feel through art and thanks for all the purple on this special day.

REMEMBER, this is not only about homosexuality and homophobia - THIS IS ABOUT ALL OF US, all those who have ever felt out of place, all those whose lives have been made difficult simply because we live in a society that teaches us that it's OK to be rude, cruel and violent to people who are different.

WAKE UP PEOPLE, we are all passing through life momentarily - LET'S MAKE THE BEST OUT OF IT, life's really, really too short to be filled with hate.

And I'm totally wearing purple underwear today.

How dare you compare that spineless coward Clementi with Teena and Shepard, what happened to Clementi was no tragedy but an act of pure idiocy.

Different kinds of hate, different kinds of violence and different kinds of victims. The result is still the same, young lives destroyed.

I find it disturbing that you would call spineless coward a kid who felt that being outed was too much of a shame and that his life had become worthless at that point. The problem is not the kid, but what was all around him. In a world that doesn't pinpoint homosexuals as freakshows to be mocked on the internet that kid would not have been so fucking scared to be out that he needed to kill himself.

A (not-so-good) photo of this deviation on a coffee mug purchased from dA is posted here if anyone would like to see how awesome it is to drink coffee from! Sorry about the quality but that is sort of explained in the comment. [link]

Again, Ciro, this deviation is amazing and I'm so happy I have a copy of it for myself even if it is smaller than I'd hoped for (oh god I'd wanted a poster size of it ) I enjoy it most mornings when waking up in the morning to it filled with hot java!

Beautiful picture. But even more beautiful is what you wrote. There's also so much beauty in all the people here in DA who advocate the same spirit of love and acceptance. What date is Spirit Day; so I know for next year. Would like to submit something in purple then.

Urethral - beautiful piece and beautiful message

"REMEMBER, this is not only about homosexuality and homophobia - THIS IS ABOUT ALL OF US, all those who have ever felt out of place, all those whose lives have been made difficult simply because we live in a society that teaches us that it's OK to be rude, cruel and violent to people who are different.WAKE UP PEOPLE, we are all passing through life momentarily - LET'S MAKE THE BEST OUT OF IT, life's really, really too short to be filled with hate." - Couldn't have said it better myself - it's not 'us' and 'them'; it's 'we' - in the end, it all boils down to the same essentials - people being afraid of difference and therefore shunning it or turning against what they don't understand, and in many cases, what they never need to understand - but make a big deal out of something that should just be neutral - like the personal life choices of others. Thank you for such a lovely deviation and contribution that serves as a reminder that these needless and idiotic attitudes and practices still exist in our world today

im putting your picture in my epic collection for two reasons. first because you are a very good artist and secondly because your rant is amazing. i want to always be able to go to this picture and know that there are compassionate and caring people out there. thank you.

beautiful work. it's disgusting that people go out of their way to make life difficult for anyone who's different.

this is simply amazing ... beautiful beyond words ... thank you so much for sharing it.

This piece just makes me go "Awwwwww how cute! wuv!" ^w^ I love it.

And then I read your comment and my whole mood changed rapidly.
That's so... so. I want to cry now. I feel so so so sorry for that poor couple! Not even able to buy each other presents? No way! Where are they and can I contact them? They should totally come live with me.
I really get where your coming from, with your feeling toward the word "Ally".
I was ostracized, kindergarten through 8th grade. Not for being LGBT though, I'm straight but for something else. Having this experience I know how it feels to be looked at with hateful eyes, and to feel like you're really as horrible as they make you out to be.
Thanks for making this piece.

I think I love you!

This was nothing short of excellent! The drawing itself drew me in from the start, and then grew more and more meaning with what I read. You are absolutely eloquent with your words, and hit so many nerves for me that I am just- just wowed! There is no other way to put it. You are obviously passionate about people and freedom and love, all of which came together so wonderfully here. You deserve such credit for the artwork and the words underneath. Your friends have a strong and amazing ally on their side, if this is how it must be.

Keep fighting the battle at their side. No matter how many steps back the government forces us to take (hey, we just got out of an 8 year steady hike backwards from all the progress we were trying to make, and we're still fighting the neanderthals that would rather keep hiking backwards through time so they can feel comfortable living in caves and pelting their slave wives with rocks) you can't stop progress. We are going to move forward, no matter how many setbacks are placed in the way, and there is nothing that the religious, conservative right can do but delay that. And, with all the hate and fear mongering going on, it's pretty obvious they are on their last leg. When they can't even make it sound logical anymore, they are just desperately reaching for the powers they once had and slipping further into their own pits of hate and despair. I just wish they would stop dragging the innocent and good in with them.

Rest now in peace, our silenced friends.

You can't imagine how happy and proud this comment makes me feel.
Thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart. I try to keep my head up, but sometimes what we're going through in this country makes me so disgusted I'm tempted to just give up. It's not like we're in a third world reality or anything like that, the threats here are much subtler. People in charge here are destroying our minds and individuality day by day. I can't even turn on the TV or open a newspaper without wanting to throw up because of all the things that pass as culture and/or information in this country at this particular moment.
I do what I can to show my distance from all of that. Today it was through a retelling of Sleeping Beauty - and I'm glad the piece spoke to someone in such a meaningful way :)

Yeah, don't give up. It's what they want from you. To bombard you so much that you give up and give in. It's only a stone's throw away from becoming physical terrorizing. And then you get the Nazi drama and we all know where that ended up. Unfortunately, the loss of so many innocent lives don't move those responsible for this backtracking to rethink their strategy, but rather the fear of being labeled as were the Nazis.

Just keep doing what you can over there. Widen your search and see what groups you can join. Be active and, since you are an artist, speak with your art. Art is one of the most powerful ways to get messages across.

You also seem very well spoken. So the two of them together will serve you well.

One of the best pieces and words I read under the (luckily) many tributes.

Amen brother. I'm a straight Ally too, and sadly, I live in a rather conservative city in the States. Granted, we don't have any attacks on homosexual couples that I know of, but people can be rude here. I wore lots of purple...buuuut I didn't see too many others doing the same. Bah, it was expected though. Intolerance is, in a word, a bitch.

This is a really gorgeous piece, it's positively breathtaking! This is a very powerful message, I commend you!
