Kind of a follow up to my Wicked characters [link]
I often get people telling me how much Son of a Witch sucks, but I had a blast with it. It's not as good as Wicked, the plot is all over the place and often doesn't go anywhere, but I just love the world Maguire creates, and I love Liir with his "yeah, whatever" attitude, he's a fantastically dull anti-hero and I love how Maguire just plays with him having him stumble upon all sorts of difficult situations. It's such a perfect way to describe the teenage years of a boy who was presented under such an uncompromising and kind of sarcastic light in the first book.
I probably should have done Liir's uncle Shell and the nuns too (I LOVED those crazy nuns), but at the time I drew this (last Christmas) I had just finished the book and was really much more interested in the love triangle which is perhaps the most psychologically interesting part of the book, a lot more complex than its predecessor (Elphaba/Fiyero/Glinda) in the original book.
So here we have our clueless hero Liir, the witch boy, sporting some features of both mommie dearest and daddy (take a look at my previous piece), his boy Trism the dragon lord and Candle, the musical Quadling girl who likes to rape comatose guys.
Yay fucked up Ozian relationships.

you'e actually kind of summed up my own feelings about this book (and to an an extent all the books in the series after Wicked). the plot is all over the place and doesn't really go anywhere like you said, which personally I hated, but the characters and dialog are great. the nun characters really are very memorable too. it just sucks that it's main story isn't very good....
